When one door closes another opens, and with Retro Studios having wrapped up development on Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze in November it will come as no surprise that they have now moved on.
Nintendo producer Kensuke Tanabe confirmed that they had already begun working on a new project, although wouldn’t be pressed for more information as to what it involved.
Shigeru Miyamoto last year indicated the developer as “a very high priority” for the next Metroid title, whilst explaining that Nintendo were looking to “leverage” the studio further. But, could it be their anticipated return to Samus’s universe?
Retro Studios president and CEO Michael Kelbaugh explained, “We love working with Donkey Kong. It’s a great character. It’s a lot of fun. We love working with Metroid Prime, with Mario Kart; those are fun, fun games to work on. So, you know, you can’t lose. Every one of those IPs have been a lot of fun to play with and work on and [we’d] love to come back to them sometime.”
