Nintendo wish to oversee development projects that involve their high-profile brands, even when outsourced to external partners.

In order to do so Shigeru Miyamoto reveals that the company will expand their internal teams as necessary, which will signals the opportunity for them to take on more projects.

“[We’ve] been working on what we can do to increase our internal staff in a way that will allow us to have more projects going at the same time,” Miyamoto explained to IGN, when asked about dormant franchises such as F-Zero.

He’s been working alongside Nintendo’s EAD Tokyo producer Yoshiaki Koizumi “on what we can do to allow the Tokyo studio to create more games,” with the company have already began to “gradually” increase the studio’s team.

He continues, “We’re doing this not by going out of house to different companies and having them develop games for us, but instead by working with partner companies and subsidiaries in a way that allows the Tokyo studio to run more projects.

Responding to why Retro Studios is working on Donkey Kong Country: Tropical rather than a new Metroid, Miyamoto responded: “Certainly we do feel that we want to leverage the capabilities of Retro Studios further, because as we’ve seen from the Metroid games, they’re a very capable studio.”
