Grand Theft Auto V was reportedly prototyped on Wii U

Rockstar Games had once prototyped how Grand Theft Auto V would play on Wii U, before it was presumably snubbed as Nintendo’s latest home console failed to ignite enough consumer excitement.

“Received a tip a while back that GTA was prototyped for Wii U briefly,” Unseen 64’s Liam Robertson shared. “A reliable source, who will probably have me killed for saying this.” He added, “If I remember correctly, it was an earlier version of GTA V… Sat on this for ages, but I don’t have any way to get more from Rockstar, so just gonna put that out there.”

It’s the first that we’ve heard the developer actually put thought behind setting a Wii U version in motion, although it shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise with Rockstar Games co-founder Dan Houser having stated at the time that “everything else is up for consideration” beyond their announced support for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Even Nintendo of America’s Reggie Fils-Aime had been asked whether the company had been trying to secure the renowned action-adventure game for the console, explaining: “In the end, it is Nintendo’s responsibility to have a large installed base, to have development tools that help the developers and publishers create great content, and essentially create an environment where teams like Rockstar can bring their very best content to our platform, and if we do that hopefully the very best content throughout the entire industry will show up on Wii U.”

Sadly, two years on, that hasn’t really happened.

  1. “as Nintendo’s latest home console failed to ignite enough consumer excitement.”

… Then why is the game on XB1?

    1. Because they knew that the Xbone would out sell the Wii U in time. Companies will project the sales of a console to decide. I love the Wii U but there is no way it’s gonna sell more than the Xbone.

    1. No, it’s not on the Wii U because it has last-gen specs at a time when the 360 and PS3 are being abandoned. Very few people own it and it makes little sense to port to it anymore.

  2. Please Nintendo, please give the Wii U a chance to have something like this. Again the game was originally made for the console and the GamePad.

  3. I honestly think that if Nintendo released GTA V for Wii U, the sales for it would skyrocket! The console is dying and only Nintendo can save it! Wii U has some great games and only if GTA V and Minecraft were one part of it, Wii U would be bigger than it is now or ever!!
