Ghost Pattern has announced its decision to push back the release date for its “lovingly illustrated simultaneous storytelling game” Wayward Strand, which is coming to Nintendo Switch.

“This delay means we can release Wayward Strand at a level of quality that we’re very happy with. Importantly, it also allows us to do it in a less stressful way for the team. Wayward Strand is a game about care, and it would make no sense to make this game without caring for each other,” the developer explained in an update.

“From day one, we’ve been rigorously committed to empathy, openness, and anti-crunch. Game releases are almost always stressful and difficult for the teams behind them, so we’re trying to find ways of approaching our release that reduce some of those pressures.

“We’ve had so much excitement and support from people like you who are looking forward to playing our game. This support is something we cherish so dearly. Thank you for being caring and patient with us. We are so looking forward to sharing the game with you.”

Taking inspiration from interactive theatre, the experience centres on 14-year-old Casey Beaumaris – an intrepid teenage journalist – on her first trip to the flying ship-turned-hospital in the skies above a small Australian town in the Summer of 1978.

Aboard the ship, Casey must help the staff, get to know the patients and uncover the truth about the mysteries behind the ship itself. Multiple storylines play out in real-time, with characters going about their lives and schedules – interacting with Casey and each other. You can choose who to speak to directly and who to eavesdrop on – with more than 20,000 lines of voiceover dialogue recorded for the game.

With your curiosity leading you through the game, a single playthrough will offer “a complete experience of one version of the story” but the developers encourage multiple playthroughs “to begin to see the full picture.”

Wayward Strand will release digitally on the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch worldwide on 15th September 2022.
