With Nintendo having announced the Nintendo Figurine Platform earlier this year, all eyes are looking to E3 2014 in just over two weeks time to see exactly what the company’s plans will be.

It would now appear that Super Smash Bros. on Wii U will be among the first games to support Nintendo’s new direction, using the Wii U GamePad’s near field communication (NFC) technology to allow figures to interact with the game somehow.

That’s according to Nintendo of France managing director Stephan Bole, who told French newspaper Le Figaro: “On the output side of games produced by Nintendo, there will obviously be the fighting game Super Smash Bros.. E3 is also an opportunity to show the use of NFC technology in Nintendo consoles. The NFC will be used in the Wii U version of Super Smash Bros.”

Super Smash Bros. will release on 3DS this summer, with the Wii U version to follow in winter.
