After wowing the world with one of the best trailers that Nintendo has ever produced, the E3 2017 Game Critics Awards has awarded Super Mario Odyssey with the coveted Best of Show, Best Console Game and Best Action/Adventure Game.

The moustachioed plumber’s Nintendo Switch exclusive adventure impressed the independent group of 40 global media outlets that cover the games industry to receive such awards, which look to “recognise the games that will shape the future of interactive entertainment.”

Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle also scored success to secure Best Original Game and Best Strategy Game, while Metroid: Samus Returns was awarded Best Handheld Game.

Those that are selected must be demonstrated in hands-on playable form at E3 2017, and, after the show closes, the critics submit their top five choices in each category – all then weighted based on ranking. The results are then tabulated by two independent parties and then compared, to ensure accuracy.
