Assassin’s Creed: Origins edged out Super Mario Odyssey to secure the top spot in the UK all-format software chart, but the moustachioed hero’s globe-trotting adventure still has much to celebrate.
It has become the “biggest ever launch for a Switch title, comfortable beating [The Legend of] Zelda: Breath of the Wild,” according to GfK Chart-Track.
The market research company also reports that the Nintendo Switch exclusive’s launch was “considerably bigger than any Wii U title’s debut,” and sits as Nintendo’s sixth biggest launch ever in the country.
With the holiday season approaching, if it hasn’t been achieved already it won’t take long for Super Mario Odyssey to join the portable home console’s first-party million-seller list – which already includes The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (4.7 million copies), Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (4.42 million copies), Splatoon 2 (3.61 million copies), 1-2-Switch (1.37 million copies), and ARMS (1.35 million copies).
We enjoyed our time with the Nintendo Switch exclusive, writing in our Super Mario Odyssey review: “Packed with energy, charm, and every trick in the book thrown in, choosing to hop aboard the Odyssey will undoubtedly result in you having the chance to experience one of Mario’s greatest adventures.
“It’s a perfect reminder of the gaming magic that Nintendo is revered for, and something that they have miraculously been able to bottle twice within a single year.”
