Star Fox Zero opened this week’s Nintendo Direct, with the legendary Shigeru Miyamoto discussing the Wii U exclusive at length.

“We made this game to be an authentic action game, the kind of which we haven’t made for a long time,” producer Shigeru Miyamoto shared. “It turned out to be the type of game where the more you practise, the more fun it gets. The overall plot and game structure is similar to the Star Fox game on Nintendo 64, but the story itself and map layout is completely new.”

He went on to talk about Teleporters, a new element that “play an important role in the storyline” and will impact the branching paths on the map overview screen. We were also shown Fortuna for the first time, a planet filled with bioweapons, while Miyamoto discussed how the new target view will allow you to outmanoeuvre Star Wolf’s four-man team.

The game’s two-player mode was also revealed, in which one player can pilot the Arwing while another shoots down nearby enemies on the Wii U GamePad. Whereas it was confirmed that the Fox amiibo will let you play as the Arwing from the classic SNES game, with other bonuses teased.

Star Fox Zero will release exclusively for Wii U in Europe and North America on April 22nd.
