Ratalaika Games and Headware Games have confirmed a release date for their PlayStation-inspired retro psychological horror game Chasing Static on Nintendo Switch.

Rendered in a graphical style reminiscent of horror games on the original PlayStation, you play as Chris Selwood who seeks shelter from a crushing storm in a roadside café while travelling through rural Northern Wales.

After witnessing unspeakable terror as he sees the waitress violently pinned to the ceiling by an indescribable monstrosity, he passes out to later awaken in the long-deserted ruins of the café to find the world now shrouded in darkness.

To escape this nightmare, he must uncover the truth about a decades-long government conspiracy using strange technology to listen to the static-laden conversations of long-lost souls.

“After so many people played Chasing Static on PC, it’s my honour to invite console players on PlayStation, Nintendo, and Xbox to my Welsh nightmare,” explains Headware Games founder Nathan Hamley. “Having my game on the platforms that hosted the inspirational games of my youth still feels surreal.”

The publisher has outlined the game’s key features as below:

  • Sonic Exploration: Audio-driven gameplay mechanics have you hunting anomalies with an experimental Frequency Displacement Monitoring Device.
  • Lo-Fi, Hi-Fi: Crunchy low poly visuals reminiscent of PS1 classics with full voice acting, high-quality sound design and a modern approach to gameplay.
  • Non-Linear Gameplay: Explore the world of Chasing Static at your own pace, uncovering its secrets in any order you please.
  • Bite-sized Terror: A self-contained story with an average playtime of 2 hours.

Chasing Static will release digitally on the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch worldwide on 12th January 2023.
