PlayStation Vita beats Wii U to “Best Hardware” Game Critics Award

The Game Critics Awards, which are judged by an independent group of 35 leading North American specialist media outlets that cover the games industry, have today published the award winners for their Best of E3 2011 categories – each contested by a number of strong contenders.

The “Best Hardware” category was always going to be a talking point, with Sony’s latest 3D display and PlayStation Vita, Ubisoft’s Rocksmith, Nyko’s Zoom for Kinect and Nintendo’s Wii U all vying for the title. Yet it was Sony’s handheld that took the crown.

No hard feelings, of course, and a congratulations to Sony who have been able to house some particularly impressive tech within their forthcoming handheld. As to why the Wii U didn’t find more favour with the North American press? It’s more than likely that, whilst finally unveiled to the public, we are still yet to receive any finalised details regarding the system – let alone even the briefest of glimpses at any software.

Although I will say that it was disappointing to find that the Nintendo 3DS didn’t receive any recognition, especially when supported by a reinvigoratingly strong first-party line-up towards the end of this year and into 2012. Ah well!

As always, here’s hoping that Nintendo will be able to storm their way to the top at next year’s E3…!
