Annapurna Interactive and Mobius Digital have confirmed a release date for Outer Wilds: Archaeologist Edition on Nintendo Switch.
Started by creative director Alex Beachum as a student project, the mysterious first-person space simulator was met with critical acclaim upon its initial release.
You play as a new recruit to Outer Wilds Ventures, a fledgling space program that is in search of answers in a constantly evolving solar system. With the freedom to explore each planet, your curiosity will lead you to probe your surroundings as you use gadgets to track down mysterious signals and decipher ancient alien writing.
The planets have hidden locations that change with the passage of time, meaning that you will, for example, need to be quick to discover an underground city before it is swallowed by sand or wander across a planet’s surface before it crumbles beneath your feet.
The Archaeologist Edition includes the Echoes of the Eye expansion, adding new locations, mysteries and puzzles for you to solve.
The publisher has outlined the game’s key features, which include:
- Welcome to the Space Program: You’re the newest recruit of Outer Wilds Ventures, a fledgling space program searching for answers in a strange, constantly evolving solar system.
- Mysteries of the Solar System: What lurks in the heart of the ominous Dark Bramble? Who built the alien ruins on the Moon? Can the endless time loop be stopped? Answers await you in the most dangerous reaches of space.
- A World That Changes Over Time: The planets of Outer Wilds are packed with hidden locations that change with the passage of time. Visit an underground city before it’s swallowed by sand, or explore the surface of a planet as it crumbles beneath your feet. Every secret is guarded by hazardous environments and natural catastrophes.
- Grab Your Intergalactic Hiking Gear: Strap on your hiking boots, check your oxygen levels, and get ready to venture into space. Use a variety of unique gadgets to probe your surroundings, track down mysterious signals, decipher ancient alien writing, and roast the perfect marshmallow.
- Echoes of the Eye: The Hearthian space program has detected an anomaly that can’t be attributed to any known location in the solar system. Grab your flashlight and prepare to illuminate the darkest secrets of the Outer Wilds…
Outer Wilds: Archaeologist Edition will be released digitally on the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch worldwide on 7 December 2023.
