Nintendo has announced that it will acquire Next Level Games, and “make it a wholly owned subsidiary” of the company.

The Canada-based developer has largely worked exclusively with Nintendo, creating games for GameCube, Wii, Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo Switch such as Mario Strikers Charged, Punch-Out!!, Metroid Prime: Federation Force and Luigi’s Mansion 3.

The acquisition is expected to close on 1st March 2021 “pending satisfaction of all relevant terms and conditions,” with the move being made after Next Level Games’ owner-directors “recently determined that the time is right for them to sell their shares and to explore “potential sale transactions.”

Nintendo sees the acquisition as a chance to secure the studio’s development expertise, with the chance to “facilitate an anticipated improvement in development speed and quality by enabling closer communication and exchange of staff with the Nintendo development team.”
