Nintendo experimenting with smart devices for marketing experiences
Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime has revealed that the company is currently experimenting with smart devices to produce “little experiences” that will seek to raise awareness of software that can be enjoyed on Wii U and Nintendo 3DS.
Speaking to Seattle-based broadcaster King 5, Reggie assured that Nintendo were well aware of the “billions and billions of smartphones and tablets” out there, and were looking to be “very smart” in using them to drive the company’s marketing messaging.
“We recognise that there are billions and billions of smartphones and tablets out there, and so what we’re doing is we’re being very smart in how we use these devices as marketing tools for our content,” Reggie began in his response.
“And that’s everything from the messages we send out, the video content we make available. But we’re also doing a lot of experimentation of what I would call the little experiences you can have on your smartphone or tablet that will drive you back to your Nintendo hardware for the full blown experience.
“That’s something that we’re going to continue to experiment on because that smartphone, that tablet is something that you have with you. And if we can motivate you to have a little taste of a Nintendo experience and drive you toward the Wii U or to the 3DS then we’ve won.”
Pushed to reveal whether such experiences would incorporate gameplay elements, Reggie continued: “It’s largely going to be much more marketing activity-oriented, but we’ve done little things where there’s some element of gameplay – a movement, a shaking, something like that, that reminds you of the experience you have with a full blown Nintendo game.
“We believe our games are best played and best enjoyed on our devices, and so the full game play will only be on Nintendo devices.”
