DONTNOD Entertainment and PortaPlay have confirmed a release date for Gerda: A Flame In Winter on Nintendo Switch.

Pitched as “an intimate narrative RPG-lite experience set during World War II and the German occupation of Denmark,” the story-driven game has taken inspiration from real-life events.

You will have the chance to walk the path of Gerda, a nurse whose life is turned upside down overnight. She will be challenged to save her loved ones while staying true to herself, armed with only her wits and knowledge of her community.

This tale is told within the intimate setting of the small Danish village that Gerda grew up in, and the choices that you must make “are made through a mix of exploration, dialogue and resource and relationship management.”

Gerda’s connection with others will determine how the story unfolds, and you can expect that every dilemma and decision that you face will be challenging and critical with the background of turmoil and war. The developer has ultimately looked to pose the question: how far would you go to protect your loved ones?

“This game is important to us because it is inspired by true stories of World War II, including those of my grandmother. With Gerda, we hope to share an accurate vision of some of the struggles of occupied populations during that time and highlight that some people were faced with difficult choices that defied absolute judgement,” explains PortaPlay head of development Hans von Knut Skovfoged.

“Through this narrative game we hope to encourage the sharing of testimonies. We know there are many civilian stories that go untold in wars and occupations around the globe, many still in the middle of theirs right now. And we are glad to be able to tell at least one such story, with Gerda: A Flame in Winter.”

Gerda: A Flame In Winter will release digitally on the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch worldwide on 1st September 2022.
