XSEED Games has announced that Akiba’s Trip: Undead and Undressed Director’s Cut is in development for Nintendo Switch.

This expands on the original Akiba’s Trip: Undead and Undressed, introducing a new story route that is “focused around lovable Finnish exchange student, otaku, and part-time maid Kati Räikkönen” which should be considered the game’s true ending. You can also expect “original side quests starring the offbeat otaku denizens of Akihabara,” as well as new weapons and armour.

Promising a “modern supernatural adventure for the Japanophile of discerning tastes,” the main game sees you play as Nanashi – an otaku lured into a trap and mysteriously transformed into a vampire. Spared from the worst of his fate by the bloody kiss of a Synthister hunter called Shizuku, you join the rest of his companions in an organisation unofficially known as the Akiba Freedom Fighters.

You must uncover the truth behind the emergence of the Synthisters – vampires who prey upon the life energy of the town’s unsuspecting figurine-chasers, maid café connoisseurs and cosplayers. That will see you soon discover that the best strategy to defeat them it to strip them of their bare essentials and expose them to the sun’s cleansing power.

The publisher has outlined the original game’s key features below:

  • Faithful Recreation of Japan’s Electronics Mecca: Like a virtual tour of Tokyo’s Akihabara district, all major outdoor locations from the town have been painfully recreated, with over 130 real-life shops accurately represented.
  • Unique and Customisable Brawler-Style Combat: Anything can be a weapon, from baseball bats to comics to motherboards, and individual clothing items may be targeted, stripped and added to the player’s own inventory.
  • Satirical Story with Divergent Paths and Multiple Endings: Playing off common anime and video game tropes for social satire, the player’s choices determine how the story progresses, leading to one of many unique endings.
  • Modern Day Setting Enhances Gameplay Options and Adds Pop Culture Feel: The in-game smartphone is used to check email, read comments on “Pitter,” take side quests, catalogue ad flyers, launch apps to identify the undead and much, much more.

Akiba’s Trip: Undead and Undressed Director’s Cut will release at retail and digitally on the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch worldwide in 2023.
