Filled to the brim with new information, today’s Nintendo 3DS Direct saw global president Satoru Iwata confirm that a new Yoshi’s Island entry is being developed for the handheld.

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island was the first in the series, releasing on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) back in 1995. This was followed some years later by Yoshi’s Island DS, which launched in 2006.

The Nintendo 3DS instalment will be the third entry within the series, gameplay footage demonstrating that the unique art style has been retained, whilst being pushed in a new direction on the handheld.

Yoshi’s core attacks are at the player’s disposal whereas new additions to his arsenal, such as gigantic eggs, provide fresher ideas to the formula.
