Friday 29th October saw the 28th Annual Golden Joystick Awards take place, coinciding with the culmination of this years London Games Festival.

With over 1.54 million votes being cast, a swarm of the year’s biggest titles all received nominations yet it was Mass Effect 2, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Plants vs. Zombies that were the big winners, each taking home two awards apiece.

Further to this, Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver picked up the Habbo.com Portable Game of the Year award, as well as World of Goo winning Puzzle Game of the Year, Guitar Hero 5 receiving Music Game of the Year and Fifa 10 kicking in to touch to gain Sports Game of the Year.

Although, there were a couple of rather surprising plumber-based absentees, in both Super Mario Galaxy 2 and New Super Mario Bros. Wii. Must have got caught in a pipe somewhere.

“It is a testament to the creativity and diversity of the industry that games are booming,” stated Simon Maxwell from Future Publishing, who organised the Golden Joystick Awards.

“Games that are playable anytime, anyplace, anywhere across social networks and communications devices are delighting new players. At the same time, winners like Mass Effect 2 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 have taken storytelling and production values to the next level for committed gamers.

“The 26% rise was staggering, with more than 1.54 million votes cast by gamers for their favourite games, setting a new record and further cementing the Golden Joysticks as a benchmark for gaming excellence.”
