Shiny Magikarp Discovered In Pokémon GO

The Water Festival event in Pokémon GO may increase the chance that players will encounter Magikarp, Squirtle, Totodile and their Evolutions, but it has also seen developer Niantic add a shiny surprise.

That comes in Shiny Magikarp, which becomes the first Shiny Pokémon to appear in the location-based game. The Pokédex in Pokémon Omega Ruby describes Magikarp as “a pathetic excuse for a Pokémon that is only capable of flopping and splashing,” although, in the Pokémon universe, it “can survive in any body of water no matter how polluted it is.”

If you are wondering how to encounter Shiny Magikarp, the Fish Pokémon will appear as normal on the main map. But, when you attempt to capture it, it will appear in Shiny Gold when you have the chance to hurl Poké Balls in its direction.

That also means that when Shiny Magikarp evolves, it will turn into Shiny Gyarados – a red variation of the Chinese dragon-like Water and Flying-type Pokémon.

The Water Festival event will run until 1 pm PDT on Wednesday 29th March 2017, and it is unclear whether Shiny Magikarp will be available beyond this.
