Simply known as the sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild since it was first revealed at E3 2019, Nintendo has explained that they are not ready to share the game’s real title for fear that it will spoil its premise.

“As for why we’re holding back on the name, you’ll just have to stay tuned because, obviously, Zelda names are kind of important,” Nintendo of America’s director of product marketing Bill Trinen explained to IGN. “Those subtitles… they start to give little bits of hints about maybe what’s going to happen.”

The teaser trailer that was shown in the E3 2021 Nintendo Direct presentation has given fans more than enough to speculate over for now, as well as confirming that the game will no longer see

Whether the final title will refer to a key character, item or pivotal plot point is unclear, seeing as previous games have directly referenced the Twilight Princess, The Wind Waker and Majora’s Mask among others.

The Legend of Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma had appeared in the Nintendo Direct to share that the game’s development had “been steadily progressing” even though it is targeting release next year.

He said: “Two years have passed since we first announced this game, and we’ve been unable to share anything with you in that time. However, development has been steadily progressing.

“This time around, the setting for the adventure has been expanded to include the skies above Hyrule. We’d like to ask you to wait a bit longer. We’re aiming for a 2022 release, so I hope you’ll look forward to it.”

The sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will release exclusively for Nintendo Switch worldwide in 2022.
