You will have the chance to play Super Mario Maker 2 online with players from around the world in the Multiplayer Versus and Multiplayer Co-op modes, but, as it turns out, not with your friends.

After hands-on press events with the course creator, it had emerged that players would be unable to compete against or team up with friends online in these modes. And now, Nintendo has clarified the situation.

“This is true. As the game is now, you cannot create friend lobbies online. You can only play online with randoms,” a Nintendo spokesperson confirmed to GameXplain.

“You can still get friends together and play with local play, and you’re free to play with four players on one Nintendo Switch system. You can also still challenge your friends to your creations and take on their designs through Course IDs and having them follow your Maker profile.”

That means that local multiplayer is your only option to play with friends. Either that or Nearby Play, where four Nintendo Switch consoles can be locally connected to a virtual room, with one player requiring an internet connection.

In Super Mario Maker 2, you will once again have the chance to play, create and share your own courses, with access to even more tools, items, and features than in the original Super Mario Maker – which went on to sell more than four million copies worldwide on Wii U.

The game’s creation tools will let you surprise and frustrate other players around the world with your mischievous and devious designs, using visual styles from games such as Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, New Super Mario Bros. U, and Super Mario 3D World.

Super Mario Maker 2 will release exclusively for Nintendo Switch worldwide on June 28th.
