The Nintendo Switch Online subscription service launches this week, and you will be pleased to know that you can use your My Nintendo Gold Points to discount the cost.

“Gold Points can be used when purchasing a membership in the Nintendo eShop,” Nintendo of America has confirmed in their Nintendo Switch Online Service FAQ. “They cannot be used for auto-renewal.”

You can earn Gold Points on My Nintendo by buying eligible games and downloadable content for Nintendo Switch, Wii U, and Nintendo 3DS, as a reward based on the amount that you have paid.

That will be 5 percent for digital purchases and 1 percent for physical purchases, which, as an example, would see you earn 250 Gold Points if you paid £49.99 for a game on the Nintendo eShop. These points would then be worth £2.50 in value and can be redeemed towards any game that you want to buy.

It’s important to know that Gold Points will expire after 12 months on the last day of the month in which you earned them. And that subscriptions, passes, in-game items, virtual currency, or downloadable content on Wii U and Nintendo 3DS will not reward you with Gold Points.
