Nintendo continue their five-part Xenoblade Chronicles X Survival Guide, sharing how to unlock Skells in Monolith Soft’s expansive RPG.

The exoskeletal combat suit is unlocked in the Wii U exclusive by earning the Skell Pilot License, received by completing an eight-part crash course in Skell combat. The mechanised suits carry more destructive weaponry, and can freely transform between walker and vehicle modes in helping you traverse Planet Mira.

With Light, Medium and Heavy models, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. Each Skell can be armed with eight weapons, that correspond to Arts that can be unleashed when in battle. Such weighty contraptions can also be used to Bind enemies, making them more vulnerable to attack from your other party members. Randomised instances of Cockpit Time will let you use Arts without worrying about their cooldown, while Overdrive enhances your Skell’s performance for a limited window.

It isn’t all positive, as enemies can dismember limbs from your mechanised suit. When your Skell Frame HP is reduced to zero, players will have a chance to safely eject from the wreckage. Skell Insurance will restore your mech the first three times that it is destroyed, otherwise you will have to pay for repairs afterward out of your own pocket.

Xenoblade Chronicles X will release exclusively for Wii U in Europe and North America on December 4th.
