Monolith Soft has revealed that the map that you will explore in Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is “over five times larger” compared to Xenoblade Chronicles 2.

“Come to think of it, we were just talking about this yesterday in the office. That the world would be crazy big for this title,” Monolith Soft producer and director Koh Kojima explained in a recent interview. “So I actually did the math, and it turns out that the total walkable area in this game is over five times larger than in the second title. It was like… ‘Yikes!’ (Laughs)”

He continued: “We mentioned the variety of maps and characters earlier, but to be able to create such a large area with a limited variation in landscapes naturally, I think that Monolith Soft has accumulated a range of expertise in map creation.

“For example, it would be easy to create variations in the landscape by preparing a myriad of textures, but we tried to be creative in a different way. In fact, there are many colonies where you can explore and enjoy quests, and if we put too much effort into adding a lot of detailed variations such as wall patterns, I think we would not have been able to provide as much gameplay as we did.”

Set in a new world that will “connect the futures” of Xenoblade Chronicles and Xenoblade Chronicles 2, you will play as protagonists Noah and Mio “amid turmoil between the hostile nations of Keves and Agnus.”

There will be six characters from those nations that will join you in a grand tale with “life” as its central theme, who search for the truth behind their conflict and set their sights for Swordsmarch – a land pierced by a giant sword.

You will journey to end the cycle of violence between the two opposing nations, having the chance to customise your party and change their classes to better suit the situations you are confronted with. If certain conditions are met in battle, each of the tag-team pairs – Noah and Mio, Lanz and Sena or Eunie and Taion – can combine into a giant form called Ouroboros that each has its own powerful moveset.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 will release at retail and digitally on the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch worldwide on 29th July 2022.
