Microsoft has admitted that it does not see either Nintendo or Sony as their “main competitors.”

Head of Xbox Phil Spencer explained that this was because neither company owns top-end global cloud infrastructure to compete with Microsoft Azure.

With the launch of the next-generation Xbox Series X approaching, Microsoft has looked to promote Project xCloud.

This technology allows you to play the same game across your console, PC and mobile, which is an area that neither Nintendo or Sony will compete in.

“When you talk about Nintendo and Sony, we have a ton of respect for them, but we see Amazon and Google as the main competitors going forward,” Spencer explained to Protocol.

“That’s not to disrespect Nintendo and Sony, but the traditional gaming companies are somewhat out of position. I guess they could try to re-create Azure, but we’ve invested tens of billions of dollars in cloud over the years.”

Spencer continues to be open to cooperating with Nintendo and Sony in ways that can benefit the gaming community as a whole, adding:

“I don’t want to be in a fight over format wars with those guys while Amazon and Google are focusing on how to get gaming to 7 billion people around the world. Ultimately, that’s the goal.”
