Nintendo saw strong hardware sales throughout Black Friday week across North America, with the Wii U celebrating first week sales of 400,000 units.
There were 1.2 million hardware units sold during the week, with Wii adding 300,000 units, Nintendo 3DS seeing 250,000 unit sales, and the Nintendo DS seeing strong demand with 275,000 units sold.
“Wii U is essentially sold out of retail and we are doing our best to continually replenish stock,” Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime explained to CNET.
“Retailers are also doing their best to get the product to store shelves. But as soon as product hits retail, they’re selling out immediately.”
Nintendo are continually ensuring that new stock is delivered to retailers to meet demand, a situation they weren’t able to address so readily with Wii.
“Wii was a unique phenomenon,” Fils-Aime added. “You couldn’t walk into a retailer and buy a Wii until spring of 2009. We’ve certainly learned many lessons from that and we are replenishing retailers more quickly this time around.
“We are looking to have as much product into retail as possible. It’s driven by consumer response.”
