Sony have let off a party popper today, announcing that the PlayStation 4 has achieved one million unit sales across the United Kingdom.
That’s been accomplished in the nine months since the company’s new-gen console launched across the region on 29th November 2013, making it the second fastest-selling home console. For Nintendo still retain the record with Wii, which surpassed the same number in the space of 38 weeks despire more significant supply constraints.
Sony UK managing director Fergal Gara clarified that their number was taken from official Chart-Track sales data, and that the consoles had been sold through to customers. In comparison, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 2 took 46 weeks and 50 weeks respectively to surpass the million mark.
“Wii got there ever so slightly faster, but it’s the fastest versus any PlayStation or Xbox – so any core gamer machine,” Gara somewhat sassed when speaking to Eurogamer.
“Our biggest problem last Christmas was our forecasts were more modest at the time when we started calling things like manufacturing capacity. So while the team did a brilliant job of getting us more than we thought we would need at Christmas, it still wasn’t enough.
“We started with a forecast. We saw pre-orders coming through. We increased the forecast. We got most of that volume but not enough, and the demand just kept going. It was only April when we started to catch the demand. So in short, way ahead. I’m expecting both a very strong sales Christmas and healthy volumes this Christmas. I don’t anticipate any consumer problems.”
