Why Sonic Generations isn’t releasing on Wii…

Sonic1

Sonic has had a fantastic run (no pun intended) on both the Wii and Nintendo DS systems, with players enjoying the speedy blue hedgehog’s Secret Rings, Unleashed, Black Knight outings as well as his return to form in the recently released Sonic Colours. That’s not to mention the successful partnership with Nintendo’s iconic Italian plumber in the Mario & Sonic games either…!

It was a surprise therefore that, with SEGA this year celebrating the 20th Anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog, their latest game, Sonic Generations, won’t be releasing on Wii alongside its PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 counterparts.

Having been queried as to the reasons for such a decision, the response from a SEGA representative was that “the game is fully HD,” and, of course, the Wii doesn’t support such output resolution.

“A SEGA rep told me there’s no Wii version because the game is fully HD,” Stephen Totilo, Editor of Kotaku, explained.

We must remember, however, that SEGA have stated that they were to release a number of Sonic games this year, so perhaps Nintendo fans are to be rewarded with a separate game – we’ll have to wait and see. We certainly want to get in on the anniversary celebrations regardless!

So, that’s that. Now, what was that about a new Nintendo console again…!?

[Thanks, Kotaku]

  1. This is one of the many reasons why my mum should get me an xbox… I want a lot of xbox games and the only gaming consoles I’ve got are nintendo DS lite, nintendo DSi, playstatino 2 and wii and this game isn’t avalible on ANY of them!!!

  2. Stupid! Not for Wii cause its not HD! Exactly what they said about the Black ops stuff not for Wii. Sega sucks! Make a version not HD for the Wii then! You’ll get tons mre money, and you wont lose all of your Sonic Fans!

    1. It would have been nice to have it on the Wii, But we need to take into account that Nintendo shouldn’t have released a console with extremely dated hardware in the first place.

I love the Wii, but frankly.

I DON’T care how innovative it is, It looks BAD.

It’s the Like the Wii is the Atari and the 360 and PS3 are the NES.

  3. The fact they that SEGA isn’t just downgrading the graphics a notch and releasing it on the Wii just astounds me!
Some of their biggest market happens to be on the Wii, while most X-Box 360 and PS3 players will most likely turn to other franchises such a call of duty or madden, seeing as those new games have already released (no stereotype intended, these are just much beloved series, and frankly those systems seem better for those genres) players time will be mostly occupied with them, while the Wii, while immensely popular, has no big-ticket releases planned for this year, and if SEGA advertised sonic generations the right way, the could make a boatload of money.
Plus i don’t have an X-box, and probably will not be getting one anytime soon, so a Wii release would be nice for me, because i enjoyed sonic colors so much.
Then again, the game might not be up to par, and this way they will not lose customers on the Wii.
We will just have to see if they have a change of heart and release on Wii, make a separate Wii-exclusive, or just ignore the Wii entirely and wait for the Wii U.

  4. Maybe they’ll re-release it for the Wii U….. which solves nothing because Wii owners have to go and buy a Wii U!

  5. After playing the game I can honestly say Wii owners aren’t missing much. Colors was a much better game. Generations lacks any sense of flow and the levels are very hit or miss. It’s a step backwards from Colors.

  6. Hey dumbasses…that’s what you get for having only a Wii…shut up or go buy a real new gen system like the rest of the world.

    1. Wii is a good console to have, Just not as your main gaming console.

  7. FINALLY a freaking Sonic game that’s like the classic version that I can actually enjoy and it’s not being released on the WII? Lame. Sorry not everyone is into having xbox’s or playstations and playing all these hardcore games. Guess I’ll be playing more Mario…

  8. That would be so awesome if they are making it for the Wii U. I really want this game but I think I’m going to hold off and just wait and see if it is coming for the Wii U.

  9. It’s official. SEGA refuses to release Sonic Generations on the Wii because it’s not HD graphics, but they release a HEAVILY DOWNGRADED version of the game for the 3DS. That’s it, then. Sonic’s dead. No point in worshipping your blue hedgehog now, ‘cuz he’s being held hostage by a dying company that doesn’t know how to market properly. Wii players, go back to Mario. XBOX 360 players, go back to CoD. PS3 lovers, go back to whatever game series Sony is marketing as popular because Sonic Generations may be SEGA’s last attempt to bring back their mascot. Bye Sonic. It was a good time… well, it would’ve been, if I hadn’t grown up in the 2000s.

  10. That makes no sense. The 3DS has WORSE graphics than the Wii, but you can clearly see 3DS cases on the store shelves that say Sonic Generations.

  11. It’s bad enough that nintendo released the wii were it can’t play HD games but it also can’t play CD’s DVD’s or Blueray DVD’s. MAN THAT SUCKS BIG TIME!!!Nintendo better make the wii u be able to play all that or i’m gonna be one MAD dude!
