Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser has explained the reasoning behind the company’s decision to launch the Nintendo Switch 2 on 5 June 2025.
While the Wii and Wii U first launched in November, the original Nintendo Switch was launched in March, and he reasoned that there are “no specific time frames” when a console is expected to release.
Instead, Nintendo has looked at which games it had ready to launch alongside the portable home console successor and also saw its hybrid design as being suited to those travelling over summer.
“We like to think that the year is a year and that there are no specific time frames when you should or must launch video games. And so, as we looked at the games that we had prepared and ready to launch with the hardware, we thought June was a very good timing,” Bowser explained to NPR.
“It’s the start of summer season, and obviously, with a Nintendo Switch 2, you have a device that you can both play at home and play at home docked like a gaming console, or you can take it out of the dock and take it on the go. So it’s a perfect game for summer travel.”
Nintendo Switch 2 will be released at retailers around the world on 5 June 2025, priced at £395.99 in the United Kingdom, €469.99 across Europe, and $449.99 in the United States.
