Why A Way Out Isn’t Coming To Nintendo Switch

Hazelight Studios will release A Way Out this week on the EA Originals label, a couch or online co-op game where you play as one of two prisoners as they work to escape from a maximum-security penitentiary.

Given that the game revolves in entirety around that co-operative concept, many see it as the perfect fit for Nintendo Switch. But, as the developer has now shared, while they are fans of the portable home console, it was announced later in their development cycle, and it would not be able to support sharing Joy-Con.

“As for Switch, we’re definitely fans of the console over here, but there were some factors preventing us from doing a Switch release. It came out quite late in our development cycle, and we’ve been very busy spending all our time getting the game to the highest quality we could make it,” Hazelight Studios programmer Lucas de Vries reasoned in a Reddit AMA.

“Also, since both players require their own camera control, it would mean that you would be forced to buy an extra pro controller to even play the game, which seems like it would be a little unfair to the concept of the Switch. It would have been quite an effort to make an automatic camera system to make single Joy-Con play work.”

A Way Out will release for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC worldwide on March 23rd.
