Whilst the Wii U was certainly the main attraction of this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo, it would seem that Sony don’t see it as a particular threat to their current generation PlayStation 3.
Jack Tretton, president of Sony Computer Entertainment America, even went as far as mocking Nintendo for being five years late to the party, citing that multimedia entertainment device and high-definition gaming were available through their console back in 2006.
“I didn’t see anything about Nintendo’s announcement that said ‘Oh, we’d better get working on rolling out a new PlayStation here pretty soon,” Tretton commented in an interview with Forbes. “Our attitude is kind of ‘welcome to the party.’ If you’re looking at being a multimedia entertainment device, if you’re looking at high def gaming, that was 2006 for us.”
During their E3 Press Conference Sony unveiled plans to launch their successor to the PlayStation Portable, now known as PlayStation Vita, later this year.
