Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. World Stage Nintendo Switch 2 Open Beta Impressions

Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O World Stage’s Nintendo Switch 2 Open Beta is now live until Monday 23 February at 6:59 PM PST. I enjoyed my time with Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown on PlayStation 4 quite a bit, upgraded it on PlayStation 5, and also bought Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O World Stage on Steam. That let me have it on my main platform for fighters with PS5, and also to play it on the go via Steam Deck.

I was curious to see how the Switch 2 port would turn out, given the delay, and my early impressions based on my time with it today are mostly positive, but I feel like some issues need to be addressed in the final game if possible.

Before getting into comparisons and technical impressions, I want to stress that this is an Open Beta and likely not representative of the final build. I’ll save my detailed thoughts on the game and how it compares to other platforms when I play the full game next month. With that out of the way, I’m happy with how Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O World Stage controls on Switch 2 so far, but the visuals could be better.

Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O World Stage itself isn’t an amazing-looking game on any platform because of how inconsistent some aspects of it are, but I like it a lot more than the original Virtua Fighter 5 release. Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O World Stage on PS5 improved on the PS4 release with better image quality, but it still has the same look, and this carries over to Xbox Series X and PC as well.

On Switch 2, Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O World Stage is using some upscaling, and this doesn’t play well with motion when the characters move in front of a busy background. Granted, the environment isn’t the focus when you’re playing a fighting game, but some of the stages with a lot of meshes and other items in the environment have some ghosting issues when you move. Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O World Stage is also lower resolution on Switch 2 docked than PS5, but I think the handheld experience is not as bad.

Note: In the comparison image above, I used a 4K capture device to get screenshots from both the PS5 and Switch 2 version docked. I then cropped the images to show the difference between both platforms in the environment and for character models and resolution.

Speaking of handheld mode, I tested it online with a friend who was playing on Steam Deck, and it worked well over Wi-Fi and was the same as when I played against my friend on my Steam Deck connected to the same network in terms of ping, rollback frames, and delay. I know this isn’t ideal to test, but my Switch 2 Dock ethernet port isn’t working anymore, so I cannot comment on the actual wired experience right now. I have an ethernet dongle on the way, so I can properly test it when I get the full game. Again, since this is an Open Beta, I didn’t want to test and compare in-depth, but I have no complaints with the input lag on Switch 2.

Note: For the handheld comparison above, I used the Steam screenshot functionality on Steam Deck and the Switch 2’s capture since there is no other way to get Switch 2 handheld images. The Steam Deck uses the default preset, which is 720p and FSR 3.1.2 at Quality setting. I did not change any of the settings. The images were both cropped to show any differences in the comparison above.

Since the Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O World Stage Open Beta is free to download for everyone, I recommend downloading it and seeing how you feel about the port before buying the game. You do need a Nintendo Switch Online subscription to play it, but you don’t need to pre-order or own anything else. I’m glad this is available to try now, since everyone can test the cross-play with other platforms and the port quality in its current state before next month’s launch.

Stay tuned for more Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O World Stage Switch 2 coverage next month.
