Konami Digital Entertainment has revealed Survival Kids as a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive, expanding on the original Game Boy Color game’s spirit of adventure.
Unity is the developer behind this “elevated co-op experience,” which has looked to harness the portable home console successor’s enhanced capabilities. The console’s communication and game-sharing features will let you seamlessly connect, strategise and work together to survive.
After discovering a tattered map, four curious kids set sail on a fateful journey only to be swept into a mysterious hidden world. Stranded across a chain of uncharted islands resting on the backs of Whurtles (whale-turtle creatures), they must rely on teamwork to explore, gather resources and craft essential tools.
With support for both local and online co-op, up to four players can chop, cook, fish, and solve environmental puzzles, all while facing the unpredictable dangers of their surroundings.
Built entirely on Unity 6, the project has helped the team improve the performance and stability of the engine. That has seen them use a wide range of its capabilities, from core engine features like Universal Render Pipeline (URP) and Netcode to live services like Lobby and Relay.
“The opportunity to develop Survival Kids with Konami has been an invaluable experience, giving us insights that will help us keep improving the performance and stability of the Unity Engine for all our customers,” explains Unity Engine Product Management vice president Adam Smith.
“Testing of our own technology aligns with a recent shift in our development approach to ensure our tools are production-tested first so game developers can confidently create beautiful games that run smoothly.”
The publisher has outlined the game’s key features, which include:
- Better Together: Crafting, exploring and tools are all designed to work better when you’re together. You might choose to fell a tree alone, but if you and a friend work alongside each other you can bring it down with half the effort! Whether playing with friends and family at home on the couch, or online, the best Survival Kids experience is played together!
- Survival Made Simple: With an intuitive crafting system and no inventory management, there’s no need for complicated menus to manage hundreds of items. Just gather the materials needed for crafting and you’re good to go – it’s that simple!
