Chorus Worldwide and LCB Game Studio have announced that Varney Lake will release on Nintendo Switch this month.

Created by novelist Nico Saraintaris and artist Fernando Martinez Ruppel, this is the second visual in the Pixel Pulps anthology which started with Mothmen 1966.

After he can’t stop thinking about a mindblowing case from Summer 1954, you must help paranormal investigator Lou Hill retrace three kids’ summer vacation from decades ago to discover the truth behind their alleged encounter with a vampire. However, Jimmy and Christine, now in their 40s, have murky memories of the time and it is unclear what really happened to Doug.

You will recall the trio’s story through choice-based gameplay and have the chance to “explore the multiple roads of a branching interactive fiction without friction.” This will require that you solve puzzles while learning more about the paranormal investigator that you play as in a dual-timeline story that takes inspiration from books with choices and branching narratives from the past.

“We love how differently Varney Lake approaches horror compared to Mothmen 1966,” explains Chorus Worldwide founder and CEO Shintaro Kanaoya. “The first Pixel Pulp instalment hid its cryptic truths in the dark surrounding woods – Varney Lake hides them in plain sight. We’re so excited for you to see the same macabre Pixel Pulps intrigue presented in a whole new light.”

The publisher has outlined the game’s key features, which include:

  • Search for the truth in the nostalgic, branching narrative
  • Immerse yourself in the story with its rich, evocative illustrations
  • Witness the fate of Varney Lake’s characters in ‘Choose Your Own Adventure’ style gameplay
  • Solve accessible, brain-tickling puzzles along the way
  • Learn more of Lou Hill, the Pixel Pulps’ recurring investigator

Varney Lake will release digitally on the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch worldwide on 28th April 2023.
