Apogee Entertainment and Trigger Happy Interactive have re-confirmed that their ultraviolent cyberpunk first-person shooter Turbo Overkill will release on Nintendo Switch later this year.

Set in a Blade Runner-meets-DOOM hellscape, mercenary Johnny Turbo returns to Paradise to clean up his crime-ridden hometown.

He discovers that the city’s entire population has been possessed by the rogue AI Syn, and its army of augmented minions. Desperate for enough money to outrun his past mistakes, Johnny agrees to compete against rival bounty hunters to be the first to destroy the greatest AI ever created.

In looking to take “over-the-top to never-before-reached heights,” the game uses Activate Hero Time – a new form of slow-motion with a twist. You will be able to build incredible speed by wall-running and dashing, sliding on your chainsaw leg and even ride on the hoods of flying cars.

The guns at your disposal include the Twin Magnums which “lock-on and instagib several foes,” the Boomer Shotgun and its attached grenade launcher, or the Telefragger sniper rifle that teleports you inside an enemy before exploding them from within.

“Since I fell in love with the genre as a player, I’ve always wanted to contribute something to the FPS canon as a developer,” explains Trigger Happy Interactive developer Sam Prebble. “Turbo uses my favourite parts of modern games like Titanfall and Apex Legends as a lens to examine the classics we grew up on. Do those level designs and challenges still work in a world where the player is more powerful than ever?”

Apogee and 3D Realms founder Scott Miller adds: “This is easily the most excited I’ve been about a shooter since the glory years of Apogee, when we were creating global hits like Wolfenstein 3D, Max Payne, Duke Nukem, and Prey.”

Turbo Overkill will release digitally on the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch worldwide in 2022.
