Activision Blizzard had plans to remake Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4, but these were abandoned after Vicarious Visions was absorbed into Blizzard Entertainment.

The developer was praised by fans and critics alike for their efforts to deliver the original Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 remake, and, according to the legendary skateboarder Tony Hawk, the second remake had already been in the pipeline as a follow-up. That is until the publisher chose to merge the studio with Blizzard to support their ongoing projects.

“I wish I could say we had something in the works, but Vicarious Visions kind of got disbanded and Activision’s going through all their stuff so I don’t know what’s next. I mean that was the plan, even up to the release date of [Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2] we were going [to do] 3 + 4 and then Vicarious got absorbed and they were looking for other developers and it was over,” Tony Hawk explained on a Twitch livestream.

When asked whether Activision had lost faith in how successful the original project would be, he responded: “The truth of it is that they were trying to find someone to do 3 + 4, but they just didn’t trust anyone the way they did with Vicarious. So, they took other pitches from other studios, like, ‘What would you do with a Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater title?’ And, they didn’t like anything they heard and then that was it.”

The dream remains dead, for now at least. But Tony Hawk remains optimistic that “when the dust settles,” there’s still a chance that the second remake could be made somehow.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 is now available at retail and digitally on the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch worldwide.
