If you want to take a break from exploring Hyrule, Nintendo has released a three-part video series that explores the making of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

That sees The Legend of Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma, director Hidemaro Fujibayashi, technical director Takuhiro Dohta, sound director Hajime Wakai and art director Satoru Takizawa all share welcome insight into how Nintendo had approached developing Link’s open-air adventure, with each video’s topic centred on The Beginning, Open-Air Adventure and Story & Characters.

That once again touches on their goal to break conventions attributed to the series, how younger designers had come up with a concept that saw UFOs invade Hyrule from space to abduct cattle, and that they had used a simple 2D Zelda game as a prototype to test the game’s structure and components.

That moves on to how Kyoto was used to comprehend Breath of the Wild’s vast scale, which is 12 times larger than that seen in The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. Cooking was an idea that came before work had started, emboldened after a decision was made to not freely award hearts to help players recover from battle. There’s more on how the physics engine and combat system were intertwined, how the soundtrack’s piano compositions look to accentuate the game’s ambient sound, and more, making it all a particularly fascinating watch.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is now available worldwide, exclusively on Nintendo Switch and Wii U.
