After battling it out in multiple rounds at the Nintendo World Championships 2017, Thomas Gonda triumphed to become the next Nintendo World Champion.

The competition had seen 24 competitors take on a challenging gauntlet with games on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo 3DS, as well as those released for the Nintendo DS, Nintendo 64, Game Boy Color, and Nintendo Entertainment System.

Those games included Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, Metroid: Samus Returns, Balloon Fight, Bird & Beans, Donkey Kong Country Returns, and Mario Party 2.

But, it started with a three-game opening stage that had included a shield-surfing challenge in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, with each round whittling down the competitors.

Eventually, two finalists remained: Thomas Gonda and Nintendo World Championships 2015 winner John Numbers. In a three-part finale that Super Mario Maker, Super Mario Bros. Deluxe, and Super Mario Odyssey, Gonda emerged victorious after outpacing his rival in the upcoming Nintendo Switch exclusive.

“We congratulate Thomas Gonda on his victory tonight. Nintendo World Championships 2017 showcases the best competitive spirit and sportsmanship of the Nintendo fan community,” enthused Doug Bowser, Nintendo of America’s senior vice president of sales and marketing.

“Whether players compete on a global stage or with friends and family members in the living room or on the go, Nintendo games always deliver fun times and big smiles.”
