The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword originally designed for traditional controls

Within the latest Iwata Asks column, it has been revealed that The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword had been planned to originally incorporate traditional button controls.

Producer Eiji Aonuma explained that whilst director Hidemaro Fujibayashi had been experimenting with MotionPlus controls when production began, he had remained skeptical regarding their inclusion.

So, what changed his decision? The sword fighting mini-games in Wii Sports Resort, at which time lead designer Ryuji Kobayashi had finished implementing button controls for combat.

The development team then reverted back to pursuing MotionPlus controls, in the guise that you see today.
