The Legend of Zelda hacked to make Zelda a playable heroine

Hobbyist animator Kenna, through aid of her professional game programmer boyfriend, has cast NES classic The Legend of Zelda under a new light, by placing the princess herself as the heroine.

“Earlier this week, I read about that awesome dad who edited Donkey Kong to let his daughter play as the Princess,” Kenna explained. “I wished I had someone who could have done that for me. Then I remembered. I’m an adult now. If he could work it out, I could too.”

Through using Tile Layer Pro and a ROM for the game, Kenna was able to switch Link’s sprite image for that of Zelda herself. It took just three days to do, which included a playthrough to see if there were any issues.

Yet having done so, Kenna was left stumped as to where to place Link within the story now that he’d been sidelined from the spotlight. In the end, the decision was made that his occupation wouldn’t change, but now stands within a room toward the end of the game.

“It makes me happy too. It feels really good to play as Zelda,” Kenna added. “I feel like I connect with her character better and it makes me feel like a big damn hero. It’s so nice to be swinging around a sword as Zelda. I can’t describe it. You really should try it for yourself.”
