Super Mario 3D World opening week sales disappoint in Japan

Super Mario 3D World was unable to fend enough consumer attention away from Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII last week, clinching second place in Media Create’s software chart.

Selling 99,588 copies, it was unable to drive Wii U hardware sales (21,002 units) which once again fell below PlayStation Vita (21,044 units). Whilst it is far too soon to hit the panic button, Nintendo will be resting their hopes on the evergreen Wii U exclusive to drive hardware sales throughout the Christmas season.

More startling news is that Super Mario 3D World marks the lowest opening week sales for the series in recent years, failing to reach the dizzy heights of New Super Mario Bros. Wii (934,739 units) but also falling below the 160,000 copies achieved by New Super Mario Bros. U.

Elsewhere the 3DS (20,797 units) and 3DS XL (63,709 units) saw incredibly strong sales, making you wonder whether the company’s marketing activity sees them making the handheld a more attractive purchase.
