Square Enix renew ‘Squaresoft’ and ‘Enix’ trademarks

It has emerged that Square Enix have recently filed separate trademarks for Squaresoft and Enix, the names that the respective arms of the companies held before they merged in 2003.

Hachima Kikō reports that these were filed on 19th January 2015, and note that the names are classified under categories for any business distributing game software, dealing in gemstones or replicas, and household goods.

These renewals are likely to be nothing more than Square Enix protecting their previous brand names, still appearing whenever they reissue their legacy software – something that they have been readily doing across Virtual Console, PlayStation Store and smartphones.
