We’ve been looking forward to playing Splatoon ever since it first colourfully splattered our lives with paint at E3 2014 last year.

And Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aimé suitably has high hopes for it, sharing with Destructoid that it was “aiming to do for action shooters what Mario Kart did for racing.” He explained that Nintendo view it as a “major” new IP, and that it is “not just about kills. It’s designed to be fun no matter what your skill level is.”

This week brought news of three new maps – Blackbelly Skatepark, Saltspray Rig and Walleye Warehouse, as well as the Wii U exclusive’s Ranked Battle and Splat Zones modes.

Splatoon will launch exclusively for Wii U in Europe, North America and Japan in May.
