Sony: Nintendo 3DS sales performance has “confounded the naysayers”

Jim Ryan

Whilst PlayStation Vita sales in Japan are ailing, Sony has revealed that they have been encouraged by the rebound that the Nintendo 3DS was able to achieve over the Winter period.

Such comments were made by Jim Ryan, SCEE president and CEO, who discussed that Nintendo’s success has proved that there is still demand for a portable market.

“One of the encouraging things about 3DS’ sales performance at Christmas is that it is confounding the naysayers who say that there is no room in the market for a dedicated handheld gaming device,” Ryan explained in an exclusive interview with MCV. “And to that extent we were encouraged by how 3DS did over the last month.”

Ryan then continued to state that whilst Nintendo 3DS sales have improved, it isn’t a threat to the PlayStation Vita.

“There are two distinct markets,” he explained. “The quality, the immersiveness, the richness of the experience that we believe we are going to offer on Vita, way exceeds anything that we believe to be available on any smartphone.”
