SEGA has announced that a Sonic Racing CrossWorlds animation will be released this September, to help promote the blue blur’s upcoming kart racer.
In Sonic Racing CrossWorlds, courses that include land, air and sea terrain make their return, with a new addition in the never-before-seen Travel Rings feature that affects the race in real time by transporting racers to all-new CrossWorlds mid-race.
Set to offer “the largest roster of characters in any Sonic racing game,” you will also be able to customise your vehicles – mixing and matching vehicle parts, powers and abilities to create a racing experience that suits your gameplay style.
Through free post-launch updates, your favourite characters from the Sonic universe will be joined by familiar faces from other SEGA franchises such as Persona 5 Royal’s Joker and Kasuga Ichiban from Like A Dragon, as well as guest characters like Hatsune Miku.
The Digital Deluxe Edition will expand the roster even further with playable characters from the hit Netflix series Sonic Prime, and a Season Pass that adds guest characters, vehicles and tracks from other iconic entertainment franchises, starting with Minecraft.
The publisher has outlined the game’s key features, which include:
- Ready, Set, Warp! Introducing Travel Rings, a new gameplay mechanic that transports the iconic characters from the Sonic and SEGA universes into new dimensions, making every race feel unique. Players can use unpredictability to their advantage with Travel Rings and change the landscape of each race!
- Race Across Space and Time: With the largest roster of any Sonic Racing game, players will be able to choose from 23 characters and race across 24 main tracks and use Travel Rings to transport to 15 different CrossWorlds.
- Level Up Races with Gadgets: Prior to the race, players will be able to equip and combine Gadgets that give different perks to shake up the race for more unique ways to play. Choose from over 70 gadgets to increase vehicle and power-up performance.
- Utilise a Deep Customisation System: Players can mix and match vehicle parts, powers, and abilities to create a customised racing experience suited to their gameplay style.
- Extreme Gear is Back! Having first appeared in Sonic Riders, the long-time fan favourite Extreme Gear flying hoverboards, are back for some extreme fun in Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds.
Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds will be released at retail and digitally on the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch worldwide on 25 September 2025. The Nintendo Switch 2 version will be released at a later date.
