SEGA has released the first episode in a two-part Sonic Mania Plus developer video series, presenting a retrospective on the original Sonic Mania and what has been added to the definitive version that’s out this week.

This sees Sonic Team creative director Kazuyuki Hoshino and Sonic Mania Plus art director Tom Fry explore the additions to the game, such as the two new playable characters in Mighty the Armadillo and Ray the Flying Squirrel.

There’s more on the updates to the Competition and Time Attack modes, as well as the game’s collectible packaging. While Tom talks about the backstory behind the creation of Sonic Mania Plus and the working relationship between him, Hoshino-san and Sonic Team.

Sonic Mania Plus will release at retail for Nintendo Switch worldwide on July 17th, and, to upgrade, an Encore DLC pack will be available to those that bought the game digitally on the Nintendo eShop priced at £3.99 ($4.99).
