Smash Bros. was under consideration for previous Nintendo handhelds

Whilst the Nintendo 3DS will get in on the action with its own version of latest Super Smash Bros. instalment, it isn’t the first time that series creator Masahiro Sakurai has looked into delivering a handheld iteration.

A sprite-based brawler excites us greatly, although Sakurai explained that anything pre-dating the Game Boy Advance simply wasn’t powerful enough to keep up with his vision.

“It’s not that I haven’t wanted to – I thought about it, I did,” he explained during an interview with GamesTM.

“To be honest, we purely didn’t have the opportunity, it just never came up. And also, to speak freely, if you look at a handheld device preceding anything before the GBA, I don’t know that it would have the capabilities to fully realise Smash Bros.”
