After releasing a Balloon Fight-inspired minigame that pays tribute to the late Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, Swedish developer Simogo have today announced that they have been working in secrecy to bring Year Walk to Wii U.

Their critically-acclaimed adventure game sees players as protagonist Daniel Svensson, who encounters horrifying creatures and cryptic enigmas as he wanders through the dark woods of 19th century Sweden.

“As you can imagine we are beyond excited about this; we’ve been wanting to make something for Nintendo hardware ever since we started Simogo, and the day is finally here,” Simogo shared in their announcement.

More than a simple port, the developer has worked closely with Scram Kitty and His Buddy on Rails develoepr Dakko Dakko. That was mostly in part to their desire for “a fresh view on the game to make it feel new, exciting and home on the platform.”

Entirely rebuilt for the console, the Wii U GamePad will play an integral role with the touchscreen being used to display an encyclopedia, map and hints, as well as letting players take notes as they ponder puzzle solutions. Motion controls are also implemented, with players using the controller’s built-in accelerometer and gyroscope to allow you to change their viewpoint.

Similar controls have now been implemented for puzzles, with a shared example being that the player must physically rotate the GamePad. The Wii U version will also be in English, French, Spanish, Italian and German – which is a first – while “other fun and surprising things” have been changed and added.

That leads to Simogo sharing their belief “that this is the definite and best version of the game.”

Year Walk will release on Wii U through the Nintendo eShop later this year.
