While Nintendo has now shared how they are challenging tradition in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, they are also looking to do so with a certain portly Italian plumber.

The incomparable Shigeru Miyamoto has revealed that Nintendo are hard at work on “a new kind of Mario” game, which he anticipates will be ready to be shown in a year’s time – notably coming after Nintendo NX’s March 2017 launch window.

“We’re always challenging ourselves to create something new, so hopefully you’ll see a new kind of Mario in about a year or two,” Miyamoto teased in an interview with IGN. “Maybe next E3 we’ll be able to share something.”

Nintendo hasn’t been afraid to experiment with the Mushroom Kingdom, resulting in Super Mario RPG, Paper Mario, Mario & Luigi, and, most recently, Super Mario Maker. But, doing so isn’t without its challenges.

“It’s kind of difficult with Mario because some of the more important conventions of Mario are based on the approachability and accessibility of those games,” Miyamoto added, indicating that hiring new staff has allowed Nintendo to look “at the conventions with fresh eyes.”
