On a recent visit to the UK, Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto provided invaluable insight into the design process behind the iconic World 1-1 in Super Mario Bros.

He touches on how Nintendo wanted players to feel rewarded when Mario grew to become ‘Super’ Mario, and why they created the Goomba as a ‘bad mushroom.’ Miyamoto moves on to discuss how they prepared players to use the B-Dash by placing safe holes that they could accidentally fall into, steadily allowing the player to learn from their own experiences rather than rely on tutorials.

Other topics revolve around how they achieved the fluidity of Mario’s movement, with Takashi Tezuka joining in the conversation to reveal which, to him, was the most memorable level that they designed.

It’s a fascinating video, and well worth a watch below!
