With Nintendo soon to center their focus on reinvigorating Wii U sales, they have announced the closure of previously available Wii services.

From June 28th Wii owners across Europe will no longer see any further updates select Wii Channels, which includes the Nintendo Channel, News Channel, Forecast Channel, Everybody Votes Channel, and Mii Contest Channel.

Similarly Nintendo will deactivate WiiConnect24, a key feature of the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, which has since been succeeded by SpotPass across both Nintendo 3DS and its home console successor.

  1. Not happy with Nintendo for removing access to WiiConnect24. Having paid for several games that use this function, Mario Kart not being the least, I am very disappointed in their decision. No ghost-sharing capabilities makes playing the current Mario Kart less fun. Please reconsider activating WiiConnect24, and deactivate it again after you release Mario Kart 8. Please!

  2. This was a rotten move on the part of Nintendo. They have rendered useless significant functionality in Mario Kart Wii, but Mario Kart for the Wii U won’t be out for nearly another year!!

I understand wanting to discontinue services to push people along to the Wii U, but the replacement for this isn’t even available yet!! Where’s the logic in this decision? It’s very premature and is not customer-focused at all.

Trading ghosts with my friends is one of my favorite parts of Mario Kart Wii. I paid for it, and now it’s gone!

  3. I was very sad when i heard this i love the Nintendo channel and the wiiconnect64 was the best part about the Wii. Now i cant play super smash bros brawl with people around the world
